On the Hard

Reversing the ends and measuring the anchor chain

Work is proceeding nicely on Renegade here at the Bert Jabins Yacht Yard. On this annual haul out we are working on a number of projects after a year of ocean travels:

  • Keel – The lead keel was faired with Bondo at some point rather than a marine fairing compound.  We have seen Bondo used on racing boats because it is easier to sand but it does not have longevity.  This led to water getting into the Bondo and separating from the lead causing the antifoul to blister.  The keel coatings have been taken down to bare lead, barrier coated, faired with the correct marine faring compound, sanded, and painted with antifoul.
  • Hull – Light sanding and a coat of antifoul.  We switched from Sea Hawk Biocop to their newer product Sea Hawk Colorkote based on good feedback from other sailors.
  • Waterline – Renegade was hull #6 of the Apogee’s and one of the first to have a 6’6” keel vs 6 feet on the previous hulls.  The additional draft moved ballast aft and caused the waterline to go up a little on the bow and down a little in the stern. Therefore, the waterline tends to touch the boot stripe aft, so we are moving the antifoul line an inch into the bootstripe.
  • Electric – A short was fixed on a cabin light power line, Victron solar controller software updated, B&G software updated
  • Plumbing – Leak exiting hot water heater fixed.  We descaled the raw water lines of the two air conditioners and the refrigeration line.
  • Genoa – Took to Quantum for servicing of chaff on UV cover.
  • Boom – We are getting a free replacement bolt from Leisure Furl for the spindle bolt that popped its end and slipped halfway off.
  • Rigging – We were able to get a great deal on a lightly used top down spinnaker furler and carbon fiber sprit.  After this unit is installed, we will be able to deploy and retrieve the asymmetric spinnaker from the cockpit giving us a major safety upgrade over the current sock method.  We are also removing our original hydraulic backstay adjusters that are past their service life and leak fluid and replacing with fixed wire segments.
  • Ground Tackle – We reversed the chain ends to lengthen the chain life and lubed the windlass.  We also measured the chain on the ground and are happy to report we have 300 feet.
  • Engine- Installation of a closed crankcase ventilation filter to decrease oil blow by in air filter

As of today we have not had any unexpected issues and we should be able to launch tomorrow (Monday 13).
