On September 9th we got some water and diesel in Newport and took off to the Block. It was a tight reach with around 6 to 9 knots of wind so we coasted along around 6 knots under full sail. The harbor, known as the Great Salt Pond, had around half the boats compared to our previous visit so we were able to get on a mooring and not worry about dragging in the deep muddy bottom. This island is sparsely populated off season and full of picturesque walking trails inland and on the coast. Amy calculated we walked nine miles of trails on just one of the days. New Shoreham is the main town serviced by ferries from the four surrounding states. Early on Wednesday morning Jim was awoken by the sounds of several people talking and music thinking it was a dream. A quick look topsides at the nearby empty unlit marina showed around 100 people on the dock in the dark with a DJ. We are not sure if people have raves anymore, so our best guess is this was the island’s off duty restaurant staff at the designated party spot of the week since there are no colleges here? Life should have some mysteries.
