Herreshoff Museum

On September 3rd we departed East Greenwich for Bristol. There was no wind and the distance was around 9 miles so we motored under overcast and foggy conditions. We anchored just south of the mooring field in 16 feet of water with good holding. That evening we were happy to see the Bristol YC set their starting line next to us for J/22 Thursday night races. The race started OK but all the boats struggled to finish as the wind died. The following day we toured the Herreshoff Marine Museum and America’s Cup Hall of Fame. The America’s Cup section consists mainly of pictures and the Herreshoff display is mainly boats. The front yard also had IACC 1992 trial horse USA-18 from the America3 campaign on display. It is amazing how some of the Herreshoff boats from the turn of the century looked like boats from the 1950’s. They were truly advanced for their times including a catamaran from 1876 named Amaryllis that was disqualified from winning races because it did not have a cabin. After the tour we took the dinghy further north and had lunch outdoors at a recommended seafood place called Quitos. On the 5th we went ashore again and enjoyed a walk around the town. Next up: Newport.
