Up the Bay

Storms on the move off Hart-Miller Island

On August 12th we departed Annapolis on a beautiful morning and headed north. The wind died down to 2 knots so we did not get to sail. Since we could not sail, we decided to stop for the night in an anchorage protected from the forecasted southerly winds. There are not a lot of deep draft spots in this area of the bay so we decided to head to an anchorage behind Hart-Miller Island, which is also a park accessible by boat. The area is saturated with crab pots so you would not want to enter this area at night. Some severe weather appeared to the south a few hours after anchoring with dark clouds, lightning, and 25 knot winds. We dodged the worst of it but kept an anchor watch overnight. The bottom was sort of a loose muck and overnight we completed three 360s (or a 1080) which resulted in some dragging. The good news is no boats were around so we just had to make sure not to drag in the shallow spots. The next morning we saw no wind so we motored north to the Sassafras River and picked up a mooring at the Georgetown Yacht Basin. We used the marina courtesy van to go to the eye doctor and store of the closest town of Middletown, Delaware. We were surprised to see nothing but corn and soybean farms on the way. So far the weather has had quite a bit of rain but we are hoping to get off the boat and do some exploring soon.
