On Wednesday 24th we departed Long Island for Conception Island. We sailed close hauled in around 13 knots of true wind with minimal waves on the bow. Conception Island is a Bahamian national park with no inhabitants or cell service. It is somewhat distant in deep water so not as many cruisers seem to visit here. It is stunningly beautiful with the clearest water I have ever seen. We were greeted by a dolphin, anchored in 16 feet and I could see every detail on the bottom. We snorkeled a few marked reefs near the boat full of life. I saw a couple of large lobsters, but unfortunately, we are not allowed to take them in the park. White-tailed tropicbirds flew overhead throughout our stay. The anchorage is surrounded by a sandy white beach several miles long. On Thursday we walked to a trail on the south end and on Friday the north end. Later Friday a chartered motor yacht anchored next to us and launched its wave runners which was not a good sign. Its guests came out to buzz us as close as ten feet, but as luck would have it the yacht crew set up tents on the beach to lure them in with champagne We were excited to see the green flash for the first time in the Bahamas. We saw it two sunsets in a row! Next stop Cat Island.

The green flash!!!
Two sunsets in a row!
Wow what a beautiful place. Stunning photos. Thanks for sharing Capt. Jim. Btw what’s a green flash?
Wanda, When the last part of the sun goes into the ocean you will see a green dot or flash under certain conditions. These conditions include open ocean to the west and no cloud cover. We have seen some green flashes in the Caribbean but this was our first experience in the Bahamas.
Thanks for sharing Cap’t Jim. I love learning new things. I would really love to see the green flash.
Absolutely gorgeous!
It is one pretty island
