On the 15th we motored upwind to moor in Waterlemon Bay. This bay gets several snorkel day boats because it has a little rock island in the middle of it. There is plenty to see here because it lies at the crossroads of USVI, Tortola, and Jost Van Dyke. We heard Michael Beans of pirate show fame on the radio passing by to hail Soper’s Hole to take on fuel. “Soper’s Hole, Soper’s Hole this is Micahel Beans, Ahrr” We guess when you are a local celebrity you swap your boat name for your own name to make things happen. An hour latter Jim thought he saw a resurrected USS Maine coming down the channel glistening white with a reverse bow, but it turned out to be the luxury yacht Excellence. Its website states she rents for $1,100,000 a week (plus expenses). That seems crazy but obviously there is a market for it.
On the 16th we headed south in heavy seas to Coral Bay. We have never been here before and found a place to anchor among derelict hurricane boats and some live aboard vessels. For the first time since we left home we found ourselves in a real US sports bar (named Skinnylegs) and were excited to see prices about half that of the BVI with better quality food. If we were land based tourists we would definitely go to St. John over Tortola. We took a walk afterwards and came across a goat fight. The goats were so angry they ignored the cars waiting for them in the road. Additional spectators in the road included a donkey who seemed to want everyone to just get along. We came back the same way to see the ramming continue after a water break. We have big wind and waves foretasted tomorrow so we moved across and anchored in Round Bay which we hope is more protected.
